Do you love a good sugar cookie? What do you prefer, one that’s thick, soft, and chewy, or one that’s a little thinner and crispier? I enjoy both! What I don’t enjoy is knowing how much refined sugar is usually in sugar cookies. It doesn’t have to be that way with these honey almond sugar cookies!

These sugar cookies are sweetened only with honey, and I promise they taste just as good as any other sugar cookie. The honey and almond extract together give these cookies a delicious and rounded out flavor.

If you have honey bees, then this would be SO delicious with your own honey that you’ve harvested. If not, try to get your honey from a local farmer or friend who has bees.

I topped our sugar cookies with a honey, cream cheese frosting which I’ll let you know how to make below. You can opt out of having any frosting on yours or you can use your own sugar cookie frosting recipe.

With the heart cut-outs these sugar cookies would be perfect for your Valentine or your gal pals on Valentine’s Day. They are such a cute Valentine’s Day sugar cookie, but you could also make them into whatever shape you want to fit the holiday or season.

Valentine’s day desserts are some of my favorites to make, because they are so fun and girly. Valentine’s day sugar cookies are especially fun because you can get really creative with the decorating.

These honey sugar cookies are very similar to making regular sugar cookies and the process is pretty much the same. You won’t believe how good they taste, they are perfectly light and soft. Get the recipe and the the free printable recipe below!

Honey Sugar Cookies Ingredients

  • 8oz or two sticks high quality, grass-fed butter (we love THIS kind, and you can either use salted butter or add in a half tsp. of salt if using unsalted butter)
  • 1/2 cup + 1 tbsp. honey (raw, local, and unfiltered is best)
  • 2 1/2 cups + 1tbsp. flour of choice (I used unbleached all-purpose flour, but whole-wheat pastry flour, einkorn flour or anything else would be delicious)
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • one egg
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract and 1/4 tsp. almond extract

Honey Sugar Cookies Instructions

Combine butter and sugar in a mixing bowl and mix on medium speed util well combined.

In separate bowl whisk flour, baking powder, and salt if using.

Add egg and extracts (extracts are optional, the almond extract really pairs nicely with the honey and gives the cookies a delicious flavor) into butter and honey mixture and mix well.

Slowly add the flour mixture until combined. Separate dough in half and form into balls, cover with plastic wrap or beeswax wraps and place in the refrigerator for 30 min.

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. When dough has chilled for 30 minutes, remove from fridge and roll out until desired thickness. We really enjoy thick sugar cookies so I rolled mine out to a little over 1/4 inch.

Use cookie cutters to cut out desired shapes and place cookies on parchment lined cookie sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until edges are just barely starting to turn golden. Frost when cooled if you like.

Store in airtight container at room temperature for up to three days.

Honey Cream Cheese Frosting

For this recipe I used a honey, cream cheese frosting to top off the cookies with. Again, this frosting doesn’t have any sugar. It’s not like traditional sugar cookie frosting in that it won’t hold its shape as well.

Once you frost your cookies with this frosting they won’t be stack-able, so I would suggest frosting them at the last minute when you are ready to place them on a serving tray.

You can make this honey cream cheese frosting to top your honey sugar cookies with or you can use your own sugar cookie frosting. Whatever you prefer!

Additions: I added a few frozen raspberries into my cream cheese frosting while I was mixing it. I wanted the cookies to have a natural, pretty pink tint to match the heart shapes.

Of course, adding the raspberries gave the frosting a hint of raspberry flavor, which I loved. If you like you can omit the raspberries altogether, keep the icing white, or color it with your favorite, natural food dye.

To make the honey cream cheese frosting combine 8oz softened cream cheese, 1/4 cup honey, and 1 tsp. vanilla. Beat until smooth and fluffy.

Spread the cream cheese frosting over top of each cookie with a butter knife and add sprinkles if desired.
