Attempted murder suspect escapes from custody in California
A man accused of attempted murder has escaped from custody in Southern California, according to authorities. Deshaun Stamps broke out from the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga during an outside recreation period on Sunday, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said. Stamps, 29, has been in custody for attempted murder since Jan. 30, 2023, the sheriff's office said.

Putin to visit Kim in North Korea on diplomatic trip, Kremlin says
Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit North Korea on an official state visit beginning on Tuesday, the Kremlin said on Monday. Putin's trip, which is scheduled to last for three days, follows North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's visit to Russia in September 2023. Putin will spend two days in North Korea before traveling to Vietnam, the Kremlin said.

Democrats launch summer spending blitz highlighting state legislative races
The presidential election is taking up much of the political oxygen in 2024. The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, the Democrats' campaign arm for state legislative races, launched a $10 million spending blitz Monday to boost key state legislative candidates and campaigns across the country, according to plans shared first with ABC News. Dubbed the "Summer of the States" campaign, the investment marks the first time the DLCC is launching a push of this size at this point in an election cycle.

As the Israel-Hamas war continues, negotiations are apparently stalled to secure the release of hostages taken by the terrorist organization, and Israeli forces continue to launch incursions in the southern Gazan town of Rafah ahead of a possible large-scale invasion. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has disbanded his war cabinet, the small group of government officials who had been tasked with overseeing decisions about the war against Hamas, a spokesperson said. The prime minister said there was "no more need for an extra branch of government," the spokesperson said.

Virgin Australia flight makes emergency landing after 'possible' bird strike in New Zealand
A Virgin Australia flight made an emergency landing in New Zealand after a "possible bird strike," the airline said in a statement. Flight VA 148 from Queenstown to Melbourne was diverted shortly after takeoff, the airline said on Monday. The Boeing 737 landed at Invercargill Airport, where it was met by emergency services, the airline said.

US soldier detained in Russia pleads partially guilty in court, local media reports
U.S. Army service member Gordon Black, who has been detained in Russia since early May, pleaded partially guilty to charges of theft during the second hearing of his ongoing trial in the Primorsky Court, Russian media reported Monday. In May, Black was detained in Vladivostok, Russia, in the Primorsky territory -- which borders North Korea and China -- on charges of criminal misconduct, the U.S. Army previously said. Black had been visiting his girlfriend in Russia and the two had a disagreement, Russian media reported.

Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich's trial to begin June 26, Russian court says
The first hearing in the espionage trial of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich has been scheduled for June 26 in Russia, according to the Sverdlovsk Regional Court. The Russian prosecutor's office announced earlier this month that the reporter would stand trial on espionage charges, officially ending any future pre-detention appeals. The journalist, a U.S. citizen, was arrested in March 2023 by Russia’s powerful domestic intelligence agency, the Federal Security Service, or FSB, while on a reporting trip to the city of Yekaterinburg.

Wildfire near LA spreads to more than 14,000 acres, sparking evacuations
A Southern California wildfire doubled in size overnight, causing the evacuation of more than 1,000 campers from a park, closing a popular recreation area on Father's Day and threatening a major freeway in and out of Los Angeles, authorities said. The Post Fire was burning out of control Sunday near Gorman, California, in the Tejon Pass area of Los Angeles County. The blaze started just before 2 p.m. PT on Saturday in the mountainous region and gusty winds caused flames to quickly spread to 5,000 acres, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire).

2 killed, 14 injured in shooting at Juneteenth celebration in Texas; police searching for suspect
Police in Round Rock, Texas, have asked for the public's help in locating a suspect in connection with a shooting during a Juneteenth celebration that left two dead and 14 others injured. The incident happened on Saturday night when a fight broke out between two groups at the Old Settlers Park at about 11 p.m. local time, Round Rock Police Chief Allen Banks said early Sunday. At about the same time, someone produced a gun and began to fire, Banks said, adding that multiple people were struck by gunfire.

2 killed after World War II-era plane crashes near California airport: Officials
Two people who were aboard a World War II historical plane were killed Saturday when the aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Chino Airport in Southern California, firefighters said. The private Lockheed L12 aircraft was off the runway approximately 200 yards away in a grass field, when firefighters arrived around 12:35 p.m., Bryan Turner, the battalion chief with Chino Valley Fire District, told ABC News. Yanks Air Museum in Chino, California, said in a statement posted to Facebook on Sunday that one of its aircraft was involved in the fatal crash.

President Joe Biden wished a "blessed and meaningful" Eid to Muslim communities in the United States and around the world in a new statement. Biden added that his administration is working to end the war and make progress toward a two-state solution. Nine people were shot, including two children, when a 42-year-old gunman allegedly unleashed a barrage of nearly 30 rounds at a splash pad park in Michigan Saturday afternoon, authorities said. The Oakland County Sheriff's office said the suspect was found dead after the shooting near the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad in Rochester Hills, about 25 miles north of Detroit, Saturday evening. The suspect was identified by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office as Michael William Nash.

Famed New York City chef James Kent dies at 45
James Kent, the famed chef behind some of New York's top restaurants, has died, his restaurants and hospitality group announced on Saturday. "We are heartbroken to share that James Kent passed away unexpectedly earlier today," wrote Saga Hospitality Group in an Instagram post announcing the 45-year-old chef's death. Kent helmed some of the most luxurious restaurants in New York City including Crown Shy, Overstory and Saga.

Potentially deadly heat wave envelops most of the nation
More than 55 million people across the nation were under an alert for extreme heat on Sunday and through most of the week ahead as temperatures are forecast to hit triple digits in some parts of the country. Over the next seven days, 265 million people, or about 82% of the U.S. population, are likely to experience temperatures topping 90 degrees as the official first day of summer arrives on Thursday. An Excessive Heat Watch was already issued Sunday for parts of New England, including Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Several injured after 'chemical agent,' fireworks caused mass exodus at Baltimore Pride event
Several people were injured as they attempted to flee a Baltimore pride event after a "chemical agent" was released and fireworks were set off in a crowd Saturday evening, according to Baltimore Police. Shortly after 8:30 p.m., officers stationed for Pride Parade festivities were informed that a possible chemical agent, potentially mace, hair spray, or another agent was released into the crowd gathered in front of the main music stage, according to police. Fireworks were also set off at the same location, causing a mass exodus that left several people injured as they attempted to flee the area.

Body of American tourist found on scenic Greek island, latest in a string of missing or dead foreigners
An American tourist was found dead Sunday on a beach on the Greek Island of Mathraki, the latest in a series of foreign tourists found dead or reported missing in the scenic vacation paradise in the past week, authorities said. The remains of the missing American were discovered at about 1:30 p.m. local time on a beach near the old port of Mathraki Island, the president of the community of Mathraki Island told ABC News. The man was last seen Tuesday at a tavern in Mathraki, west of Corfu Island, where he was staying with a Greek American friend, investigators told ABC News.

Top ISIS leader in Somalia was target of US airstrike
A United States military airstrike in Somalia targeted the top Islamic State leader in late May, but it remains unclear if the leader was killed in the airstrike, according to U.S. officials. Abdulqadir Mumin has been identified by the U.S. as the head of the Islamic State in Somalia, an African affiliate of the terror group once known as ISIS. A statement from U.S. Africa Command disclosed that on May 31 it had conducted an airstrike in a remote area of northeastern Somalia, south of the Gulf of Aden, that killed three militants affiliated with the Islamic State.
