SANDUSKY, Ohio — For the first time since opening in mid-July, Cedar Point today reached guest capacity limits set during the pandemic-shortened season.
The park tweeted early this afternoon that all reservations had been claimed for Saturday. It’s the first time that’s happened since Cedar Point opened in mid-July with coronavirus-related capacity limits set in consultation with the state of Ohio.

Cedar Point opened on July 9 with the number of guests limited to about 20% of total capacity, which gradually increased to 50% in subsequent weeks. Total capacity is about 55,000 guests, according to park officials.
Cedar Point generally didn’t come close to its attendance limits early in the season, with crowds at about 15-20% of capacity, according to park officials. The park even eliminated its reservation system in late July, saying it wasn’t necessary because crowds weren’t big enough.
Last month, Cedar Point announced it was activating its reservation system again, starting Oct. 3, in anticipation of larger crowds during the fall.
Park officials have said that nice-weather Saturdays in the fall attract the biggest crowds of the year. Last year in October, for the first time in its history, Cedar Point had to turn away guests because roads into the park were so clogged with visitors. In response, the park added new lanes and tollbooths into the park to speed entry.
Crowds generally have not been a problem this year, due to Covid-19, although the number of visitors heading to the park has increased in recent weeks, according to guests and social media reports.
Cedar Point this fall replaced its popular HalloWeekends tradition with its Tricks and Treats Fall Festival, a series of weekends that include Halloween-themed activities and entertainment, but no haunted houses.
The park tweeted that reservations are still available for Sunday, as well as all days through the end of the season. The park is open noon-8 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through Nov. 1.
